In 1983, sixteen Lahore-based women artists met privately at Salima Hashmi's home and wrote this manifesto in retaliation of the long-time oppression (which had worsened under General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq's rule) they endured. Due to the political climate at the time, the manifesto was not published.
