The personal archive of Lahore-based Salima Hashmi includes documentation pertaining to her career as an artist, art writer, art educator, curator, and organiser, as well as archival materials she collected throughout her career. While the archive provides a retrospective overview of Hashmi’s wide range of work, it also offers an illuminating entry into the modern and contemporary art scene of Pakistan.

Biographical Notes
Born in 1942 in New Delhi, Salima Hashmi has played multiple roles in the Pakistan art ecology since the 1960s. She relocated to Lahore with her family during the Partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. She was a student at the National College of Arts, Lahore (NCA), from 1960 to 1962, then went on to study at Bath Academy of Art from 1962 to 1965, and at Rhode Island School of Design from 1989 to 1990. From 1966 to 1969, Hashmi stayed behind in the United Kingdom, and worked for the BBC World Service. Upon her return to Pakistan in 1970, Hashmi began teaching at NCA as a lecturer and eventually became its Principal from 1995 to 1999. Between 2003 and 2015, Hashmi was the Dean of Visual Arts and Design at Beaconhouse National University. Hashmi is also the daughter of the prominent poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
