Catalogue of solo exhibition entitled Recreate "Dong Cun Rui" by Yang Jiechang at Cheng Pin Gallery in 1999. Dong Cunrui is a patriotic hero promoted in literature and cinema by Chinese Communist Party and government in New China's mass education. Hou Hanru wrote, 'Yang Jiechang's new project aims to deconstruct such a text of revolutionary propaganda by means of re-malpositioning it into a context which has nothing to do with the text itself. This context is contemporary art. He incorporates cinema (on video projection), book (cartoon), sculpture (bronze cast), photography (film stills) and environmental design (the gallery converted into a cinema and a library) to re-create the hero's image in the popular film "Dong Cunrui" which has been "officialised" and "hegemonised" in China.' The present catalogue includes essays by Hou Hanru, Martina Koeppel-Yang, interview by Chen Tun, and artist biography.
