The Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo opened its doors in March 1995 with the exhibition 'Art in Japan Today 1985-1995'. Four years since opening, it initiated the 'MOT Annual' series of exhibitions, which offer a review of the latest developments of art produced in Japan and especially in Tokyo. This first exhibition is based on the concept of "modesty". Although the nine artists featured express themselves in different ways and deal with diverse subject matter, their work shares a closeness to ordinary, everyday life and restrained visual volume. Their very modesty makes them radical, in opposition to art as spectacle.

Images are accompanied by artists' statements (in Japanese). List of exhibits, artists' biographies and statements in English are provided at the back of the catalogue.
