Chu Hing-wah's over twenty years of experience as a nurse in a psychiatric hospital has added a distinctive quality to his art. His understanding of and compassion for mental patients led him to present his subjects not as violent and agitated people but as emotional and psychological beings. As remarked by Chang Tsong-zung in the introduction of this catalogue, Chu can be said to have learnt "an alternative language of the soul" in the creation of his paintings.
