This book is developed from the seminar 'Active Withdrawals—Weak Institutionalism and the Institutionalization of Art Practice' held from 27-28 July 2013 at Guangdong Times Museum. Curated by Biljana Ciric and Nikita Yingqian Cai, the seminar was presented alongside the exhibition 'One Step Forward, Two Steps Back-Us and Institution, Us as Institution'.

'Active Withdrawals: Life and Death of Institutional Critique is an anthology of essays addressing the institutionalisation of artistic practices and the act of withdrawal—a seeking out of places of contemplation and retreat—that is often adopted in Eastern art. The writers critique the growing desire for museums and galleries to become recognised as places of artistic intervention and expose concerns surrounding the institutionalisation of artists' work, covering artistic practices across Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, China and South East Asia.' - excerpt from the back cover
