‘Selected from the vast archives of the British Library’s Oriental and Indian Office Collections, this exhibition of 150 facsimile photographs, highlights the “golden age” of photography in India, a period which witnessed the flowering of amateur and commercial photography throughout the subcontinent. The half century, 1850-1900, covered by this exhibition heralded an unprecedented level of experimentation in both the technical and function development of the medium. It confirmed, what many had long believe, that at its best photography in India during the nineteenth century compares favourably with the finest produced anywhere else in the world.’(Preface)
