'A New Find: Roberto Chabet Rodriguez,' press release for Roberto Chabet’s first solo exhibition, published in The Manila Chronicle Magazine on 23 April 1961.

Excerpt from the press release:

'A promising young artist - Roberto Rodriguez - makes his initial bow to Manila's art public in a first one-man show of paintings and sketches. Subdued in theme, style, and colour, his paintings are restrained to the point of solemnity, saved, however, by a sense of colour and design which is uncanny. Limited in materials and palette (watercolour and gouache), and executed on the most unpretentious materials (chipboard and empty cardboard crates), the pictures achieve a richness through the subtle manipulation of simple flat areas and subtly related tones. A consistency of style pervades every painting in the exhibition. (His) approach to art is that of a painter; he grapples with the elements of his rather than (his) subjects. His themes are limited and simple: landscapes with architectural overtones, figures against simple backgrounds, and collages made from newspaper and magazine clippings. Buildings and house predominate, rendered in abstract terms, improvised, imaginary, and simplified in the interest of pictorial clarity.'

The exhibition opened at Luz Gallery on 22 April 1961. Originally scheduled to end on 4 May, the exhibition was extended until 11 May.

The clipping includes three photographs of Chabet's paintings: Nocturne, Houses Against Yellow Sky, and Houses in Space.
