This work is from the Re-take of Amrita series.
'Amrita is dressed in a sari in a Paris café, probably La Dome, around 1933. Second from the left is the painter Georges Rohner (1913-2000), and bending forward is Bob Humblot (1907-1962). Both became members of an important painters’ group called 'Forces Nouvelle,' formed in 1935. An interesting connection can be made between this café scene and a painting by Rohner called The Card Players, also done in 1933. The painting has an Amrita-like woman in the centre facing the main card player who, although wearing army uniform, could be Rohner. The figure of the card player is cut at the edge, almost at the same place as the gesticulating man in the photograph. Both men have their hands raised, the one on the painting holds an 'ace' in his hand. Behind the 'Amrita' of the painting is Humblot, seen as a bald young man. Gestures and gesticulations by many hands animate the picture plane of the painting.'
