'Indira’s wedding with Kalyana Sundaram took place in Shimla on 2 October 1937; a week later Amrita declared that she would get married the following year. In April 1937 she had painted The Bride’s Toilet. Inspired by Ajanta, this is one of the paintings from her South Indian trilogy. Here, in a detail of the painting, I draw in the extra figure of a boy from the painting’s edge. To further crowd the scene in Ajantaesque fashion, I slip in a transparent Amrita from the Lake Balaton pictures; she joins the ceremony for the sublime bride.'
