This work is part of the Ziggurat series, which is a set of collages and drawings made by Chabet from the 1970s to the 1980s. His collages from this period were not layered, but were made with whole sheets of paper taped side by side or by placing sheets on top of each other. The new Ziggurat paintings use canvasses painted in primary colours from the artist's previous installation, 10,000 Paintings I Must Paint Before I Die (2009), which have been re-arranged in configurations that correspond to the shape of ziggurats.
The works were included in Chabet's solo exhibition, 'Roberto Chabet: Ziggurat,' at West Gallery from 29 March - 23 April 2011. The exhibition is part of 'Chabet: 50 Years,' a year-long series of exhibitions organised by King Kong Art Projects Unlimited in various venues in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Manila from 2011 - 2012.
