Photograph of the opening of Roberto Chabet's exhibition, 'House Paintings,' at Finale Art File, Sunvar Plaza in 1986.
House Paintings is the second in a series of works which use plywood as a material and subject for painting. The first work in the series was Russian Paintings in 1984. House Paintings, which began as a sketch for a poster for Filipino architect Leandro Locsin, translates the basic schematic of a house. The horizon is rendered unstable with the placement of the panels; each house is slightly teetering on its side, held up by shelves and brackets. On one house, two narrow shelves hold a pair of black squash balls, a nod to
Jasper Johns' Painting with Two Balls.
