Artist Benodebehari Mukherjee (b.1904 – d.1980) is considered one of the pioneers of 20th century modern art in India. Having taught in Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, he was the mentor and teacher of some stalwart artists including K.G Subramanyan. Because of the close relationship between Benodebehari Mukherjee and K.G Subramanyan over the years, the two artists continued exchanging through letters after K. G. Subramanyan left Santiniketan to teach at the Faculty of Fine Arts, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, in 1951.
