Gyarsilal Varma was a traditionally trained craftsman from a family of masons in Jaipur. After being introduced to N.S. Bendre in Vanasthali (Rajasthan), Bendre urged him to join as a tutor/demonstrator for Mural Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, in 1955. Since then, Gyarsilal has partnered with K.G. Subramanyan in a number of outdoor mural projects and is remembered for having taught generations of students a variety of mural techniques that included Jaipur fresco, buon fresco, cast and throw cement relief, and mosaic among others.
