This interview is part of Hong Kong Art History Research Project – Phase II, a collaboration between Asia Art Archive and Hong Kong Museum of Art. It was conducted at Gaylord Chan's home on 28 July 2015.

Biography:
Gaylord Chan (b. 1925, Hong Kong)

Trained as an engineer and awarded a M.B.E. for his contribution to the telegram industry, Gaylord Chan started attending art and design courses at the Department of Extra Mural Studies of the University of Hong Kong in 1968. Chan has been a founding member of the Visual Arts Society since 1974 and established his own art school Culture Corner Art Academy in 1989 as a means to experiment with alternative models of art education.

In this interview, Chan shares his perspective on art pedagogy. He recalls his courses and student-teacher interaction at the Extra Mural Studies Department, and discusses his own teaching practice. He also recounts the formation of the Visual Arts Society, its exhibitions, and the role that such groups played in Hong Kong’ s art ecology of the 1960s–70s.

Chan lives in Hong Kong.

Simon Chiu Kam-shing, Assistant Curator I (Modern Art) at the Hong Kong Museum of Art from 1988–1993, curated various exhibitions during his tenure, including the Hong Kong Artist Series (1990–92). Chiu is Programme Director of Art Farm, a Hong Kong-based art education institute that collaborates with others to provide outreach art activities and training for young people. He has been commissioned to produce over 20 videos documenting artists' practices by local museums and Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

Josephine Chow was also present at the interview, and participated in discussion.

陳餘生
1925 年生於香港

陳餘生原為工程師，因對電訊業的貢獻而獲頒大英帝國員佐勳章(M.B.E.)。陳氏於1968年入讀香港大學校外課程部的藝術及設計課程。他亦是香港視覺藝術協會(1974 年至今)的創會會長，並於1989年創辦文苑畫院，探索另類藝術教育模式。

陳氏在訪問中分享其對藝術教學的觀點。他憶述當時在校外課程部的課程內容和師生互動的情況，以及分享他的教學實踐。他亦講述當年香港視覺藝術協會的成立過程以及一起籌辦展覽的往事，並剖析協會在1960至70年代香港藝術生態中所擔當的角色。

趙錦成於1988至93年任職於香港藝術館，離職前為一級助理館長（現代藝術），負責有關現代和香港藝術的展覽。在香港藝術館任職期間，曾參與策劃《香港藝術家系列》展覽(1990-92)。趙氏現職香港的藝坊兒童藝術創作坊項目總監，他致力與不同機構合作，向兒童和青少年提供藝術外展活動和訓練。他亦受本地各博物館及香港藝術發展局委託拍攝超過20段藝術家記錄短片。
