Biography:
Cheung Yee (b. 1936, Guangzhou, China)

Graduated from Normal University of Taiwan in 1958, Cheung Yee was a member of the Modern Literature Art and Association from 1958–64 and Circle Art Group from 1964–71, two artists groups with the highest visibility inside and out of Hong Kong during 1960s–70s. Cheung traveled to USA and Europe in 1965 upon receiving a grant from the Institute of International Education. He has taught at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he was Chair of the Department of Fine Arts from 1984–1992.

In this interview, Cheung shares his experience of participating in various exhibitions, including his 1961 exhibition ‘Salon d’Aout’ at the St. John’s Cathedral Hall in Hong Kong, as well as his solo exhibitions and those of the Circle Art Group, held at Luz Gallery in Manila, Philippines, in the 1960s. He also discusses his teaching experience at various institutions, including thoughts on courses that he designed.

Cheung lives in Los Angeles, USA.

Vivian Poon is Research and Programmes Coordinator at Asia Art Archive and an artist. Poon worked at the Hong Kong Museum of Art from 2010– 2012 as Assistant Curator II (Modern Art). She was also Project Researcher (2008) for the ‘Studies on Cheung Yee’ research project funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Her research interests include art ecology and regional history.

張義
1936 年生於中國廣州

1958 年畢業於台灣師範大學的張義是現代文學美術協會（1958-64）及中元畫會（1964-71）的會員，兩者均為1960 至70年代於本土及海外極為活躍的藝術家組織。張義於1965年獲國際教育協會資助負笈美國及歐洲。他曾於香港理工學院及香港中文大學新亞書院藝術系任教，並於1984 至92 年出任中大藝術系主任。

於是次訪問中，張氏分享他當年參展的經驗，其中談及1961年於聖約翰座堂舉辦的《八月沙龍》、1960年代在菲律賓馬尼拉盧茨畫廊舉行的中元畫會聯展和個展。他亦憶述早期於不同學術機構執教的經驗，當中不乏他對課程設計的意見。

張義現居美國洛杉磯。
