'In the obsessive realm of shadows: father and daughter, Umrao Sigh and Amrita, are dramatised by cross-lights from opposite sides. Umrao Singh's photograph, taken in the flat at Rue de Bassane in 1932, shows him standing behind an unoccupied chair. Amrita, from a photograph of 1932, is seated in the same chair. The composition is reminiscent of the conventional studio 'wedding photograph.''
