This photograph captures artist Mrinalini Mukherjee with her work at the Kasauli Art Centre Artist Workshop.
Being the second Artist Workshop in the Centre, Vivan Sundaram explains that 'in 1977, the Weavers Service Centre (WSC) sent a weaver to set up a pit loom at the camp site so that artists interested in weaving or designing could directly work with the professional weaver. The other aim was to encourage locals to take up the craft. Since then, the WSC has regularly sent a weaver to the workshop.' - cited in 'Seven Young Sculptors' exhibition catalogue, 1985.
Artists participating in the workshop included Nagji Patel, Bhupen Khakhar, D.L.N. Reddy, Chandrakant Bhatt, Mrinalini Mukherjee, Amitava Das, Jogen Chowdhury, and A. Ramachandran.
Kasauli Art Centre was founded in 1976 by artist Vivan Sundaram in Kasauli, a hill station in Himachal Pradesh, North India. The Centre is known to have organised artist camps, international artist residency programmes, seminars, and theatre workshops, all designed to explore common grounds between artists, filmmakers, critics, architects, playwrights, and performers.
