Held at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1982, 'Contemporary Indian Art' was part of The Festival of India in Britain, which was designed to project 'the spirit of India and her achievements' in all areas of the living experience which constitute and condition contemporary Indian society. The exhibition was divided into two parts of three weeks each, featuring 44 artists from a span of three generations with 133 works in total. 'The Gesture, and Motif', inaugurated on 16 September and which ran until 5 October, showed artists whose works have an emblematic quality with stylised figures. The second part titled 'Stories, Situations' opened from 8 October until 31 October and included artists who told stories through their work.
