An exhibition showcasing mainland Chinese artists from two cities; Kunming (Yunnan province) and Chengdu (Sichuan province). ‘ Yunnan artists portray a romantic nostalgia, whilst at the same time concealing an inner anxiety with a layer of humour to camouflage a sad recognition of a lost lifestyle. Familiar images on first view are simple and uncomplicated; look longer and one can read their underlying message...In Chengdu it is more difficult for the artists to create a tightly structured artists community: Commercialism and anonymity are the exacting survival code of Chengdu. Here the artists seek their release from the harsh realities of urban life by portraying their personal, intimate and emotional moments on canvas where a deep and more serious mood emanates.’ – Maggie Oldham. Also included in the catalogue are artists' biographies.
