The present catalogue accompanies the exhibition Making a Home: Japanese Contemporary Artists in New York held at Japan Society Gallery, New York, from October 2007 to January 2008. Many Japanese artists have lived and worked in New York since the 1950s. This exhibition presents work of 33 key New York-based Japanese artists, ranging from young, emerging talent to established figures, who work in a variety of media.

'Presenting 33 artists living and working in New York, Making a Home aspires to expand the concept of "Japanese contemporary art" and establish the idea of a Japanese aesthetic diaspora in New York City. In doing so, it examines the contribution of Japanese contemporary art to global trends, identities, and outlooks... This exhibition is premised upon the ideas surrounding a home, ranging from the comfort and safety found in a physical structure to the angst and loneliness felt from living in solitude.
