Catalogue to a comprehensive exhibition of Japanese contemporary art of the 80s, held in four different European capitals: Stockholm, Nov 24 1990-Jan 27 1991; Copenhagen, Feb 23 1991-Mar 17 1991; Helsinki, Apr 5-May 19 1991; and Reykjavik, July 20 1991-Aug 25 1991. Rudyard Kipling's famous dictum, "...East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet" once reflected Western arrogant characterisations of the East as exotic and unknowable, "less assertive, more preoccupied with...the natural world," as opposed to Western classical antiquity and male individualism. Nowadays, with globalism and multi-culturalism levelling out differences, this view is no longer applicable, and in recent decades, the flow of influence has tended to go from East to West. However, despite Japanese Modern Art influence on the continent and the USA, it still remains relatively unknown to the Nordic countries. 'Japan Art Today' readdresses the balance. Essays by Takahiko Okada, Hideo Namba, along with a summary on each artist. Biographical information included.
