This publication was produced in association with the exhibition ‘Word and Meaning: Six Contemporary Chinese Artists’ held at the University at Buffalo Art Gallery in 2000. It features, on the one hand, how the participating artists have re-presented the Chinese system of writing; on the other hand, the accompanying essays written by noted specialists provide a useful map with which readers can use to study and explore the uneasy confluence of ancient tradition and modern experience found in the exhibits. Biographical information of the artists and the contributors are also included.
