Varma was a pioneer in Indian painting that encompassed Indian mythological paintings utillising Western painting techniques of portraiture.
This monograph incorporates works that have not been seen prior to this publication, and also maps, letters, photographs and other archival material. Many artworks shown are those of portraits, one of Varma's specialties, depicted on both oil on canvas and watercolour on paper.
