This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Qiu Zhijie - Twilight of the Idols' at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, on view from October 2009 to January 2010. It is part of Qiu Zhijie's ongoing project titled 'A Suicidology of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge', which has seen numerous incarnations since its inception and was previously exhibited in Shanghai, Singapore and Beijing. The work focuses on the ambivalent nature of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. Constructed during the Mao era, it is a symbolic monument to modernization and ideology for the Chinese — and the scene of thousands of suicides. 'Twilight of the Idols', the Berlin project, consists of a series of sculptural and performative installations that fill the entire exhibition hall of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and extend to the front garden. Artist biography and list of works included. German translations of texts provided at the back.
