The paintings of Leng Hong convey a bygone time and a taste for strange and mysterious light. A critic once wrote that Leng ‘is a painter of departures…departures loaded with memories and nostalgia of what is left behind. And always, there is a dream of an elsewhere’. Leng Hong trained as an artist at the Shanghai Academy. He left for France in 1987, and moved to Canada in the early 1990s. The influence of both Chinese brush and ink painting and his training in the Western academic style is evident in his works. The paintings presented in this exhibition catalogue were produced between 1990 and 1994. Also included is the artist's biography and an essay by Sophie Orloff.
