Opening of Nguyen Nhu Y's solo exhibition 'Naïve of Hanoi', Salon Natasha, 25 September 1998. Second from the left is Frederick Balfour, an American journalist who was the Deputy Bureau Chief in Agence France Presse. To his left is the Hanoi-based Finnish artist Maritta Nurmi.
'Naïve of Hanoi' showcased paintings, drawings, and sculptures produced by Nguyen Nhu Y. According to Natasha Kraevskaia, the artist received training as a sculptor at Hanoi University of Fine Arts, but his arts often possessed qualities of naïve arts or outsider arts; the expressions pure and direct, delivering a hybrid of innocence and wisdom. Nhu Y also strived to convey in his works his romantic visions and personal fantasies.
This exhibition marked the beginning of the extensive collection of Nguyen Nhu Y's works by Salon Natasha.
