Untitled 2005 (Notes on Johannes Vermeer)
Photograph of Roberto Chabet's Untitled 2005 (Notes on Johannes Vermeer), an installation composed of GI sheets, an open leather trunk filled with mirrors laid on a carpet, facing a neon sign that spells 'Vermeer,' and, in an adjacent room, four other neon signs - 'The room,' 'The window,' 'The letter,' and 'The map' - taken from recurring details found in Vermeer's paintings.
Prior to this work, Chabet also completed a trilogy of works which pays homage to Dutch artists. In this work, Chabet deconstructs and reconfigures Vermeer’s world into a tableau that meditates on 'the act of looking and the complex and overlapping processes of interpretation and perception.'
The work was first exhibited at Mag:net Gallery, Paseo, in 2005. This photograph shows the reconstructed version of the work in 'Roberto Chabet, Lee Aguinaldo and Fernando Zobel: Windows to Conversations,' a group exhibition by Roberto Chabet, Lee Aguinaldo, and Fernando Zobel at Ateneo Art Gallery from 6 October 2011 - 28 January 2012. The exhibition is part of 'Roberto Chabet: Fifty Years,' a year-long series of exhibitions organised by King Kong Art Projects Unlimited in various venues in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Manila from 2011 - 2012.
