From Sea to Shining Sea: A Portrait of America—Photographs by Hiroji Kubota—Photo Documentation
Caption at the back of the photograph:
'Newport Beach, California. During the winter of 1990 I heard about the oil spill from a British oil company's tanker off the shore of Huntington Beach, California. When I visited the adjacent town of Newport Beach in February, the oil had been washed ashore by the strong westerly winds and the water and beach were being cleaned by the "human wave" method. When I returned in the summer of 1991 the oil was gone and the beach was filled with people.'
