The work was first shown in the exhibition entitled 'Memorial: an installation with photographs and sculpture' (1993).

Excerpt from Kamala Kapoor, The Art Of Vivan Sundaram, Lustre Press, Roli Books, 2002:

'Ordinary, everyday objects of storage (home) and travel (migration): tin trunks, put together in an unexpected combination, emanate a monumental, heritage feeling. The work involves a passage: a pathway of red sandstone slabs, intersected by a channel of blood. The walk-through engages the spectator by means of active involvement in a recall of the '92-'93 Mumbai riots, a remainder that some things are never forgotten.'

Materials used include tin trunks that were painted, rusted, and etched. There is also a neon sign with the words 'Fallen Mortal' inside the top trunk.
