Chinese Junk with Dreaming Sea-Men

Excerpt from Kamala Kapoor, The Art Of Vivan Sundaram, Lustre Press, Roli Books, New Delhi, 2002

'The symbolic/narrative logic of this work, with its sensual surfaces, its rubbed and burnished textures, its colours glowing from within, and its range of art historical references, including a Van Gogh-like swirl of ascending strokes, all underscore the process of travel and passage. The series to which it belongs (the exhibition, 'Journeys') could itself be read as a political and artistic metaphor.'

Exhibition history: 'Journeys,' Aurobindo Gallery, New Delhi; Kala Yatra Sista’s Art Gallery, Bangalore; 1987-1988.
